I'm a Director for the Vancouver Skateboard Coalition. On April 30th, 2008 I spoke with local Vancouver residents and Parks Board staff about the omission of skateboarding from the 2009 draft Capital Plan.
From a business prospective, building a skateboard facility provides a higher return on investment when compared to traditional sports facilities, specifically due to the following positive attributes of skateboard parks:
- the high number of daily users of the skateboard facility
- minimal operating costs
- meets the needs of a wide range of demographics simultaneously
- promotes a lifestyle that uses alternative modes of transportation
- concrete skateparks don't need water resources to function
- economically affordable for most families to use a skatepark
All of these factors tell me that building a skatepark in a community that needs one is going to get them the best "bang for their buck". This means that the Profitability Index of skateboard facilities is far greater than one.
